A Summer List: To Me, From Me in 2017

A Summer List: To Me, From Me in 2017

Lists are great. Lists are the best. Especially when they’re fun lists like random thoughts I’ve had this summer: random ideas & random epiphanies I’ve had while on the train to work or running around the lake. Here’s a massive list I made to myself, for myself, from myself, about nothing in particular.

  • Belly-laughing is the most effective & most important core exercise.

  • Dates from the farmer’s market are as good as (better than?) dinner dates.

  • To maximize feeling your best, only buy and clothes that fit you well and you LOVE.

  • Your shoe size is apparently anywhere between a 7.5 and a 10.5, depending on how great the shoes are & how committed you are to making them fit.

  • POWER OF ATTRACTION. Your thoughts become your life.

  • I say the words cool! dope! interesting! unreal and amazing excessively. I say Oh my god so excessively.

  • The best feeling is coming home from the grocery store and seeing all the new food you have for the week.

  • Days where you can be creative, write, and read are important to being a human.

  • Vision boards!

  • Don’t ever feel obligated to “go out” just because it’s the weekend.

  • Sunday preparation for the week is important (mentally getting ready – making lists, looking at an overview of your week. Also getting your bags packed, food prepared, etc.)

  • The funkier the sunglasses, the better.

  • Recovery runs and days are necessary to getting stronger.

  • How old is too old to wear your retainer? Do you have to get it replaced at any point?

  • Getting letters in the mail is SO exciting.

  • Don’t wear a thick sweater when your friends cut your hair.

  • Never trust that lavender hair dye will actually die your hair lavender

  • Getting your nails done WILL make you feel like you have it all together. Every time.

  • 4th of July fireworks in San Francisco are anticlimactic, but a worthy experience.

  • Makeup is overrated (focus on making your skin clean with as few products as possible & healthy, #natural habits) - unless it’s gold eyeliner.

  • Never reject a free laundry service.

  • Be discerning about who you spend time with.

  • Paper towels work as coffee filters for a limited number of days, don’t push your luck.

  • Hand washing dishes is more efficient than using a dishwasher and it takes less time.

  • If you don’t buy paper towels, you won’t waste them.

  • Listen to people without bringing it back to yourself (“I know what you mean, my dog died when I was 3” is not a sympathetic response to your friend who is sad about her dog dying).

  • When someone is interviewing you to dogsit his dog and asks if a dog ever got lost under your watch, reconsider before replying “No, but I’ve lost a cat”.

  • Oversized jean jackets > fitted jean jackets.

  • On the hunt for good pins.

  • Athleisure is the summer look.

  • Money is fluid.

  • Apple cider vinegar + grapefruit juice + water + lemon.

  • Act the part.

  • Walk like you own the place.

  • A balance between sleep-full and sleepless nights makes life interesting. BALANCE.

  • Wine on the patio. Wine on a roofdeck. Wine anywhere.

  • Keep inspiration flowing in your life – whether that be in the form of the people you’re around, the books you’re reading (currently, Jen Sincero’s You are a Badass) or the playlist you’re listening to ("Stay Woak").

  • Power mornings are the key to a fab day (run, apple cider vinegar, coffee, power outfit).

  • Do what you say you will do.

  • “Wine Off” is a life savior.

  • Quinoa goes bad way quicker than I thought.

  • Don’t drink if you don’t want to. Do if you do want to.

  • Afternoon runs are hard to make happen. I’m a strong supporter of morning running.

  • Start your run before you’re really awake.

  • Life is a series of networking opportunities.

  • Let creative energy flow when you feel it! Heck, use a coconut oil spray bottle as a microphone and a broom as a dance partner.

  • Don’t let other people make you feel inferior. Ever! Know your worth, don’t settle. Don’t lose sight of your irreplaceable value.

  • Knowing all the lyrics to “Coming Home” and “Love the Way you Lie” is a good party trick.

  • Chapstick should be in every bag and in every coat pocket.

  • Vanilla protein powder over chocolate protein powder.

  • Good things come to you when you’re putting out good energy into the universe.

  • San Francisco fog is magical.

  • Easy on the self-deprecating humor (what you think you become).

  • Recognize your flaws.

  • Open heart. Open, open, open!

  • The way I emphasize words makes people think I’m being sarcastic.

  • Man, I love chips + salsa.

  • It feels really good when you can be your full self. Take note of your environment when this happens (and when it doesn’t). This summer, I’ve felt really myself and like I am using my full potential.

  • I love the balance of hard work and fun and I love striving for that balance everyday (#libra).

  • Be more confrontational!!!! It may be awkward but you gotta be bold! And don’t let people walk all over you.

  • Don’t use Google Maps every time you leave the house. Get lost!

  • You have a gut feeling for a reason. Use your intuition.

  • Give people a chance.

  • Biggest blog inspiration is LeefromAmerica.

  • Never enough journaling.

  • I don’t care what anyone says, summers in San Francisco have perfect weather.

  • I feel tough when I say I’m living in Oakland and I like that.

  • Salsa + hummus combo is amazing (tastes like cheese).

  • Nutritional yeast (also tastes like cheese).

  • Short hair makes you look older.

  • Never pay for a haircut when you have friends.

  • Spanish is so fun to speak & practice.

  • Hanging out with people you connect with is extremely important for your happiness.

  • You get sad when you leave people you connect with because (see above).

  • I’m so lucky to have such a large, supportive, close family. It’s a gift when we can all be together. It gets harder to coordinate as we get older.

  • Listen to podcasts!

  • The Mission district in San Francisco is so vibrant and has so much culture.

  • Everyone appreciates when you take pictures of them without them knowing, even if they express distaste at the time.

  • Flossing!

  • Don’t wash your hair so often.

  • Use limited products.

  • There’s traffic here no matter what time of day.

  • Avocado + salt + pepper + balsamic vinegar.

  • If I was on a deserted island and could eat one thing, it’d either be a sweet potato or cereal.

  • I've decided that I have a resting sad face. People ask me "what's wrong?" all the time. When nothing is wrong.

  • I’m working on making faster decisions (especially in the cereal aisle).

  • Solidify ya signature scent. Vanilla lace?

  • TV show character inpso: Olivia Pope of Scandal.

  • Ask people questions about themselves and then ask more.

  • You don’t need a lot of clothes.

  • Walks to anywhere!

  • People watching is the best activity, ever.

  • “I feel EMPOWERED.”

  • Write letters to people you care about, they will appreciate it.

  • Thank your family for all that they do for you.

  • Life is so cool & interesting & switches directions so quickly.

  • Finding people who make you laugh is a BLESSING.

  • Be open to learning about people.

  • Mornings of coffee & contemplation.

  • Sometimes slow mornings are good, sometimes fast mornings are good.

  • I.love.smoothies.

  • You can’t even taste the veggies you put in your smoothie.

  • Roll your muscles even though you don’t want to.

  • I’m learning a lot & I’m thankful.

Stay peachy,
Mariah 🍑
