Why did you become vegan? Christofer Drew, probably. That's only slightly a joke. I went vegetarian in 2010 because of my undying teen love for NeverShoutNever and what I thought it meant to be authentically hippie, and that ended pretty quickly. I revisited the idea of changing my diet when I was a junior in high school and something (later found out to be dairy) started making me sick every day around the same time. I quit that, then immediately realized I didn't need to keep meat and eggs around, either. Four years later, I really don't need to.
What are the biggest challenges of being vegan? Restaurants in certain areas are tricky. A lot of places around here (Western Massachusetts) don't have a lot of vegan stuff on their menus, and if they do, it's rarely labeled. So basically not living in a city is one of the biggest challenges. Following @losvegangeles and not being able to relate is an even bigger challenge. On the bright side, any college town is almost guaranteed to have something.
What are the best parts of being vegan? It was definitely veganism that taught me self-restraint. Patience, too. Likely because of this, I’ve made so many helpful changes in my life: cutting out added sugar, breaking off toxic relationships, sticking with exercise, drinking more water, researching/reading up on a topic even when it's dry. Cutting out animal products has made room in my life for much better things—literally and figuratively.

My partner (who is also vegan) and I make curry a lot, and you can always mix that up depending on what type of protein, veggies, or color you're feeling that day. I follow @sweetsimplevegan on Instagram and we made her oil-free stuffing for Thanksgiving. We also keep finding ourselves returning to Thug Kitchen. We've tried their whole wheat banana pancakes (with the added sugar removed and still incredible) and creamy pasta sauce made from cauliflower. These are really just if we want something hearty, but there's so much out there it's ridiculous.

Why did you become vegan? I watched a documentary called Forks over Knives and realized how I was living my life in ignorance. I always knew that meat and dairy were unhealthy but this documentary really solidified my concerns about them. I then went on to watch Vegucated about the ethical reasons why we (as a society) should be vegan which brought me to tears and I realized I had no choice in the matter. The next morning I woke up a vegan and never looked back. Fun fact: I went straight from eating meat to becoming a vegan (there was no intermediate vegetarian stage)!
What are the biggest challenges of being vegan? Honestly it's nothing about the food. People are always asking, "how do you not eat cheese?! or chicken wings?" But that has NEVER been a challenge for me. It's more about other people's views and judgment on my decisions. You'd be surprised as to how many people (even family members) alienated me in this decision. They viewed it as an attack on them when I was just making an ethical, healthy change for my own life. It's hard when people look at you like you're crazy and ask "what do you even eat?" I have so many witty responses for those moments but I don't want to come off as crazy, even though I know in my heart of hearts that I am in the right. It's a difficult conversation to constantly endure.
What are the best parts of being vegan? I feel so light and healthy. I feel more alive than I ever have. I know that I am making a concrete difference in this world and am not contributing to many horrors that occur each and every day in slaughterhouses. Being a vegan has changed my life. I have a stronger respect and admiration for animals, all animals. I just genuinely feel better about myself after becoming a vegan. And the food too, of course, is amazing. I don't feel tired or fatigued after I eat ever! It's amazing.

Why did you become vegan? I became vegan after watching A LOT of food documentaries. Primarily for ethical reasons, I love animals and I could not continue supporting horrible treatment of animals of the meat and dairy industry. I decided to continue educating myself about the external effects diets can have and learned that it also is the most environmental way to live- and had great health benefits as well. It is a privilege to be able to choose what I eat, the least I can do is exercise that privilege in ways that will benefit more than myself.
What are the biggest challenges of being vegan? I don't find any real challenges with being vegan, but there definitely things I find annoying. People projecting stereotypes on me based on my lifestyle choices gets annoying for sure. There's many different ways to go about veganism, and just because other people handle their veganism in certain ways does not mean that is how I do and vice versa.
What are the best parts of being vegan? I feel my life fully reflects my morals. It's empowering to know that every time I chose to or not to eat something I am making a statement about what I believe in. My life is an active protest against industries I do not support. It feels good to know that my every day life has positive effects extending beyond my sphere. Also I've met some DOPE people!

Why did you become vegan? I became vegan once I educated myself on the inhumane and unethical treatment of animals in the animal agriculture industry. Once I became aware of the atrocities happening to these animals I made the switch.
What are the biggest challenges of being vegan? The biggest challenge of being vegan is not seeing change happen soon enough. Knowing all this information and everyday encountering the barriers in society that keep us from making the change is very hard to see. Knowing that this can be the solution to so many problems but not seeing people embracing the change is probably the hardest part.
What are the best parts of being vegan? Veganism is living change; it is an embodiment of humane education and countering the habitual norms of society. Veganism has empowered me to educate myself and never be afraid to swim against the current. I love waking up everyday knowing my food choices are no longer harming others. I love going to sleep knowing I don't need to take the lives of others in order to live my own. I feel immensely powerful now that I refuse to accept the information I was brainwashed to believe and I took it upon myself to look further and find my own truth. I exposed myself to what the animal agriculture industry works so hard to hide from consumers and I have never found more pride within myself than when I look back at how I countered the oppressive structures of the world regarding the innocent lives of animals by taking it upon myself to question what I've been told is right and normal and necessary.

Why did you become vegan? Honestly it was after watching Cowspiracy. I was a vegetarian on and off my whole childhood, but once I saw that documentary I just couldn't do it anymore.
What are the biggest challenges of being vegan? Probably the social aspect of it. I get judged a lot for it, and many people do not care to understand why I do it.
What are the best parts of being vegan? Feeling good, and clean. Knowing you are doing your part to spread love around the world.

Why did you become vegan? I originally became vegan because I am a huge animal lover and didn't think that eating animal products aligned with my morals. I also had been a vegetarian for two years prior and was both lactose intolerant and not a fan of eggs, so i figured it wouldn't be a hard transition!
What are the biggest challenges of being vegan? I definitely think that the hardest part for me was my family's reaction. They were totally scared that I would become "protein deficient" and have all my hair fall out or something. My mom still has me get regular blood tests to make sure that my B12 and Iron are doing fine, which is something that I've grown to appreciate because I know the love behind it. Most of my family has accepted by now that this isn't a phase, so I'm definitely thankful for that.
What are the best parts of being vegan? Being a part of this incredibly compassionate and aware community has opened so many doors for me. The people I met through veganism, especially through the Plant-Based Nutrition Club at UMass have expanded my views and kept me grounded in veganism. I also really love how much healthier I feel and the fact that I can go to bed every night knowing that my choices did not contribute to any being'a suffering. Also, vegan dessert?? Yes please!

Why did you become vegan? I've been vegetarian since I was 11 because I have always loved animals. Unfortunately, my diet became very unhealthy and I started eating too much sugar and processed foods that contained milk and eggs. My sleep schedule was terrible and I often felt lethargic, so when my friend told me she had lots more energy on her vegan diet, I thought about making the switch. I finally committed to being vegan after watching videos on YouTube where I learned where most milk and eggs come from. The animal treatment is horrifying and I don't want to give money to those industries.
What are the biggest challenges of being vegan? Being vegan has been easier than I thought it would, but eating out is definitely the biggest challenge. I had to go to IHOP with my family and they had pretty much zero vegan options. I ended up eating a cup of fruit and toast with jelly which was not ideal, but my family all had bad stomach aches after their meal, so I won in the end.
What are the best parts of being vegan? I find that it's hard to be unhealthy. Now I never feel gross after a meal and I have more energy throughout the day! In addition to feeling good about my body, I'm being sustainable, and saving animals. Being vegan rocks.

Why did you become vegan? My sister had been vegan for almost a year at the point when I made my transition. Once I learned about the way animals are treated in the meat, dairy, and egg industries I knew that vegan was the correct path for me. I also had always felt groggy and sick from dairy so changing my diet not only helped the way I felt mentally but it physically helped me and my health.
What are the biggest challenges of being vegan? The people who do not understand are my biggest challenges. Sometimes I get lost in my emotions when people come at me against veganism but I'm getting better at stating the facts instead of letting my heart talk.
What are the best parts of being vegan? THE FOOD :) But seriously, vegan food is unreal and I never feel unfulfilled. Obviously, it's amazing to know I am helping the planet and not contributing to the abuse of animals.

Why did you become vegan? I watched the documentary "Vegucated" which informed me of the horrifying truths about animal agriculture, and the impacts it has on the environment and our health.
What are the biggest challenges of being vegan? The biggest challenge for me is getting my close friends and family to understand why I chose veganism. It's difficult since most of my family members are big meat eaters and they don't really want to eat what I eat. However, my mom does help me out with coming up with vegan dishes, so its not all bad!
What are the best parts of being vegan? Knowing that everyday I get to make the choice 3 times a day, to say no to animal cruelty, reduce my carbon footprint, and keep myself healthy.

Why did you become vegan? I became vegan because I was losing a grip on my health emotionally and physically. After learning about the health benefits of veganism, I also learned about the cruelty in the production of animal products and its effects on the environment which helped me make the complete connection.
What are the biggest challenges of being vegan? sometimes the judgement from people who do not understand all the benefits of the lifestyle.

Why did you become vegan? I became vegan for environmental, health, and moral reasons. After cutting down my electricity and water use in day to day life, I started looking at other sources that were affecting my environmental footprint. As well, I started looking into what labels such as "free range" and "cage free," and realized the animals providing my food weren't being treated well, even when I wasn't eating meat.
What are the biggest challenges of being vegan? I think the biggest challenge of being vegan is the constant explaining and excuses. I've found myself excusing my dietary choices in front of my friends, giving reasons like being sensitive to lactose, rather than explaining that I disagree with the treatment of animals. As well, it's discouraging to truly explain, and then hear people dismiss it and mock it.
What are the best parts of being vegan? I truly love the food I eat!! I love feeling healthier and finding new foods to eat. However, nothing is better than feeling as if I'm living a life that I believe in, environmentally and morally.

Why did you become vegan? One of my long time best friends (MARIAH!!!!!) became vegan and I was really inspired by her new adventures and her new blog and the way it seemed like veganism was taking her so I decided to try it out impulsively as a challenge "Vegan Until Thanksgiving". After Thanksgiving rolled around I realized I was enjoying veganism much more than I anticipated and it had given me new excitement in cooking and eating and new adventure. The longer I continue to practice the more social it becomes and more passionate I am about the lifestyle.
What are the biggest challenges of being vegan? I think the biggest challenge of being vegan is explaining yourself to others. It seems as though people always have comments or are questioning your reasoning for going vegan. As a Division 1 soccer player I often get questioned, from my parents a lot, about lacking protein and vegetables not being enough but I don't see my diet as a restriction, I eat MASSIVE bowls of delicious vegetables and have tried so many new things I never would have otherwise tried. I think it also is sometimes awkward or uncomfortable when you are out at a restaurant or at another person's house and veganism becomes a hurdle that other people have to adjust to for your sake.
What are the best parts of being vegan? I have become so much more adventurous in my eating and cooking. I think my family even likes having me home from school more than before because I am always in the kitchen roasting vegetables or baking a new treat that they also get the opportunity to taste. Similarly, with others who are vegan it is an instant connection and respect making it a close community.

I have found that foods such as PB and nuts are a good way to fill yourself up and snack because they have protein, good fats and higher in calories. 3. Sweet potatoes everyday, all day. 4. It's better to double check ingredients because sometimes crackers, granola, or everyday products you wouldn't think of are made with eggs or dairy. 5. I love adapting recipes from The Minimalist Baker and Pinch of Yum, both are very cool and creative blogs.

Why did you become vegan? Well, there are many reasons why I chose to become a vegan, both ethical and moral. I guess the reason that got me to make the change is that I personally believe that no living being is better than another. I don't think that we should chose to take away other creatures life just so we can benefit when it's not necessary in the first place.
What are the biggest challenges of being vegan? The biggest challenge for me personally, is trying to go out with people when they don't understand why you are vegan. Most people are really nice about it and even interested in the lifestyle. However, I find there is a certain amount of judgement that people will have. Its as if they automatically think that you are going to be arrogant or something. Ive literally been told that I'm surprisingly nice for a vegan. Sometimes when I go out with people, I get comments and it can just get a bit uncomfortable.
What are the best parts of being vegan? I absolutely love the vegan lifestyle! It made me have more of an appreciation for food and living things in general. Also, it has definitely forced me to be more creative with my cooking and spend more time in the kitchen in general. I think the best part of all is just being introduced to a whole new community of people that are so welcoming! Take the PNUT Club at UMass for example. I would have never thought to join if I wasn't vegan. But now, I was able to meet a bunch of really sweet and smart people who share the same views as me.

Why did you become vegan? After years of claiming that I was "against animal cruelty" by being an active member of animal rights organizations, I finally found the disconnect between my morals and my actions when I watched the documentary Earthlings. From then on I saw that the best thing I could do for the earth, for the animals and for myself was to go vegan. Everyone votes with their dollar, make sure you support companies and farmers who share your beliefs and whose profits aren't reliant on cruelty.
What are the biggest challenges of being vegan? From my experience, a family that refuses to accept your beliefs can be the hardest part. But I've learned to adapt and prepare for social occasions with my own food, and conversations with them have only made me stand more firm in my beliefs.
What are the best parts of being vegan? Pretty much everything honestly. I love that I learn new things every day about the environment, animal welfare, nutrition and fitness. I love that I can run farther and faster. I love that I can visit farmers markets and get to know my local farmers and discover new produce I've never tried. And best of all is I can still enjoy my favorite foods (veganized of course!) while not contributing to the meat/dairy/testing industries.

Why did you become vegan? I had already been vegetarian for almost a year (11 months to be exact) and I began my vegetarian journey by educating myself on the treatment of animals in the food industry. The documentary Earthlings troubled me the most as I started exploring what goes on behind closed doors. One night my roommate (Lauren Bettino) and I decided to watch the documentary Cowspiracy and as soon as the film ended we both looked at each other and made the decision to go cold vegan.
What are the biggest challenges of being vegan? I would say the biggest challenge of being vegan is explaining to people why I'm vegan. It is hard for people to understand why I've chosen this lifestyle, but I have learned to approach the conversations differently depending on who is asking and that itself has increased my patience. Another challenge would be that my family (immediate and extended) are all extremely old-school Italian, which makes the conversation even harder for why I am not eating meat, fish, cheese, etc. on holidays.
What are the best parts of being vegan? I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 9. I was forced to mature at a young age and I have always been told that eating a healthy diet would decrease my risk for complications in the future. I can honestly say I never ate healthy when I was younger. My health was in control but my diabetes was a roller coaster ride. Today I have never been in better health since I've gone vegan. My blood sugar is in great control, my body requires less insulin, I'm eating (and loving) more vegetables, and both my body and mind feel better than ever before! I also feel like I'm making a difference - and I feel good about saving resources and animals!

Why did you become vegan? I had already been vegetarian for over five years mainly for ethical reasons, but throughout my college career I became more and more educated about the sustainability aspect of consuming animal products. My roommate (Elisabeth DiDonato) and I decided to watch the documentary Cowspiracy one night and both went vegan cold tofurkey that night after we finished watching!
What are the biggest challenges of being vegan? Old habits die hard, and people LOVE their meat and cheese. Unfortunately not everyone is exposed to the same resources/info about the many benefits of veganism, so explaining why I'm vegan is often a challenge. I'm still in the process of learning how to be patient and understanding with people (*cough* my old school traditional Italian father) who defend their meat-eating to the death (literally).
What are the best parts of being vegan? There are seriously so many amazing aspects of being vegan. I've made tons of friends (including Mariah through UMass's P-Nut Club!), I've tried foods and restaurants I probably never would've, and my mind and body feel better than they ever have before. Plus I can feel good about saving tons of resources and animals!

Why did you become vegan? I had wanted to become vegan for a year or so before as I learned about the horrific treatment of animals. I found myself feeling much better after getting rid of dairy in my diet and challenged myself to try veganism, and I haven't looked back since! It also helped seeing many people/family members around me becoming vegan, so it felt a lot less scary!
What are the biggest challenges of being vegan? My biggest challenge is going out to restaurants or explaining myself to others. I don't like feeling as though I'm putting someone out because of my food choices, but at the end I feel good about what I'm putting into my body.
What are the best parts of being vegan? So much FOOD! I love making new recipes and discovering new vegetables or fruits I have never had before. I love feeding my family and hearing back that it was better than a non-vegan dish. the best part is having such large portions and feeling energized from food.

Why did you become vegan? For me it has always been about the animals. I saw a stand at a free earth day concert in Boston for Massachusetts Animal Rights Coalition, and I took all of their literature, read it that night, and it simply made sense. I had been vegetarian since I was 8 years old so this just seemed like the natural next step. I love animals; the sanskrit prayer "lokah samastah sukino bhavantu" which means may all beings everywhere be happy and free, and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my life contribute to that happiness and freedom for all, is what keeps me going.
What are the biggest challenges of being vegan? When I first went vegan, like many new vegans, cheese was a huge challenge for me. Once I internalized what cheese really means though, I realized that the pain and suffering that it causes simply is not worth the taste. Another thing that was challenging for me was convincing my doctor that it was okay. When I was 14, when I first went vegan, my pediatrician, who is near and dear to my heart, sent me to three different nutritionists who did not really know what to tell me, and looked things up on the internet. I know however, that my amazing friends are going to change the way that veganism is seen in the allopathic medicine world.
What are the best parts of being vegan? Being vegan is the best thing ever. But, a few amazing things include: finding new vegan restaurants, encouraging new vegans, cooking, baking, eating, loving animals... the list goes on. So many of my friends are vegan, so its really great having such a supportive community of loving people cheering me on!

My go to smoothie: handful frozen blueberries, one frozen peeled banana, about 1 cup of non-dairy milk, about 2 tablespoons of almond butter or any nut butter really, blend! enjoy, smile! (sometimes I add 2 tablespoons or so of cocoa powder). Some advice: Positivity is key. There is already so much negativity in the world, and if vegans just add more hate to the world, than we are not living the life of compassion that we have set out to live.

Why did you become vegan? After 9 years of being vegetarian, I wanted to do more than just not eat meat and seafood. I started to learn about the horrible conditions dairy cows go through every day. I learned that male chicks are grounded up whole because they are of no use. I learned that so many makeup and beauty products are tested on animals. I learned that all animal products are filled with cholesterol and saturated fats and greatly contribute to negative health conditions. I couldn't continue to live my life knowing innocent animals were being hurt and killed just for my satisfaction.
What are the biggest challenges of being vegan? The biggest challenge is explaining your values to someone who just doesn't understand. Going to restaurants with non-vegans that don't understand your choices can be challenging.
What are the best parts of being vegan? EVERYTHING! Living a life based on your core values of passion, compassion, understanding, among much more, is the best part. I love being creative with dishes to make. Sharing your veganism with friends and family is also amazing.

Why did you become vegan? I became vegetarian when I was 15 (over a decade ago!) because the thought of having to kill (=murder) any living creature just because it 'tastes good', didn't make sense to me. The more I read about nutrition and vegetarian eating the more I realized how horrible animals are treated, how bad animal agriculture is for the environment, and how badly human workers are treated. I couldn't keep supporting a system that created needless pain and suffering - there's enough of that in the world as it is.
What are the biggest challenges of being vegan? Finding a variety of options when going out to eat!! But I love burritos, so it's not that bad :)

Being able to share your thoughts and discuss the trials and (many) benefits of being vegan with others makes life easier and happier. From personal experience and what I have heard from my friends, the biggest reason for returning to an Omni diet is feeling isolated or alone - no one wants that! And trust me, you aren't alone! There are over a million vegans (and 10 million vegetarians) in the US alone.

Why did you become vegan? I became vegetarian when I was in 5th grade following my sister. And after learning more about the horrifying treatment of farm animals on factory farms, I went vegan in 8th grade. I have always adored animals so I couldn't continue to support the cruel meat/dairy/egg industries.
What are the biggest challenges of being vegan? Constantly thinking about all the terrible things happening to animals on factory farms. Pretty much learning about a darker side of humanity that is so normalized in our culture. Also, trying to communicate to closed-minded people.
What are the best parts of being vegan? That I am not giving money to so many animal industries that deplete our earth's resources and harm animals. Activism has been a huge part of my last two semesters, I love using my frustrated energy to spread awareness.
